Alpen / Lower Rhine

The community of Alpen is located between Xanten (10 kilometers away) and Rheinberg (7 km) in the lowlands of the Lower Rhine region. The district seat of Wesel lies 11 kilometers to the southwest. Alpen’s surroundings feature a number of historic ruins for sightseers and regular events that are always worth visiting, including a local street festival on the last weekend of summer vacation, the Brunnenfest (in the town’s Veen district), and the Waldfest up on the Bönninghardt.

The wooded areas of this elevated plain and the nearby Leucht forest offer an extensive network of trails for hikers and bikers. There are also charming stables and plenty of paths for those who are fond of riding. One bike trail, known as the “Alpentour am Niederrhein”, promises a wide-ranging experience along its 37 kilometers, while the lake near Menzelen is known as a hotspot for water sports.
